DIY Cadillac ATS Paddle Shifters

By: Paul Barton

Supplies:

1- Heated paddle steering wheel item number on e-bay is: 202687955408 (GM Part# 23316245)

2- Paddle shifters: 23133990 & 23133991 (GM Parts direct)

3- Screws for mounting paddles (two needed): M5-.80 x 12 (Lowe’s/Home Depot)

4- Black split lock washers (two needed): #10 (Lowe’s/Home Depot)

5- Jumper wire from BCM X3 to X275 connector (one needed): GM Part # 13575870

6- Soldering Iron/Solder

7- Shrink Wrap

8- Harness wrap/electrical tape

Tools:

1- T50 bit

2- Long small flat headed tool (airbag removal)

3- Flat bladed plastic trim removal tool (steering wheel trim transfer)

4- 7mm socket (passenger kick panel removal)

5- Small flat headed screwdriver (terminal lock release)

Procedure:

1. Disconnect Battery

2. Install paddles onto the new steering wheel Install paddles (PN 23133990/991) and use hardware (PN M5-.80 x 12, 2 x each), screw the paddles onto the new steering wheel and attach the left and right paddle wires.

3. Remove the air bag Use a small flat headed tool. You will see two small holes on either side of the steering column. Put the tool inside, level to the ground, there is a metal rod going down either side that clips the air bag. Once you feel the rod, press in and that side should unclip, and the airbag should start to lift out. Do the same to the other side of the air bag did not fully release.

4. Remove the steering wheel This requires a T50 bit, one bolt in the center to remove. It’s quite tight, so prepare accordingly. Disconnect appropriate connections to remove steering wheel, paying special attention not to remove the clock spring, unless you are planning on replacing it already.

5. Transfer over internal components e.g. steering wheel controls Use a plastic flat bladed tool, unclip all the wheel trim from OE wheel. This will require some effort but, the plastic is quite resilient just be careful.

6. Install new wheel Simply line up the splines and slide it on, ensure the steering wheel angle sensor is also lined up correctly. At this time, connect all previously disconnected connections.

7. Install airbag Simply press it back into place, rods will click when airbag is secured.

8. Remove passenger trim. Remove the four 7mm screws under the passenger side. Two up front of the glove box lid hinge area, one at an odd angle on the rear center side corner, and the last under the cover that comes off once the outside front screw is removed. Disconnect any modules in the way of gaining access to the BCM on the passenger side firewall. Also, be sure to disconnect flood light plug. Remove the trim that runs along the floor opening off the door. Pull the carpet back and you and will see the BCM mounted against the firewall and the X275 IP harness connector just in front of the door near the floor.

9. Attaching BCM X3 to the X275 wiring harness Measure the length of wire you need to make for connecting the BCM to the X275 (GM Part # 13575870). Insert GM Part # 13575870 in the X3 connector, terminal crevice 21. Trace the harness from the X275 to the green X3 connector into the BCM. Leave some extra length in the wire so there is no tension on the cord. Attach terminal lead from BCM X3 to terminal 88 of the X275 harness, by means of soldering or wiretap, depending on preference.

10. Wrapping the wire into the harness (Optional) Wrap harness wrap over the wire alone the harness a couple times to give an OEM look.

11. Re-assemble Plug everything back in, put the carpet back down, and floor trim back on. (Tip: installing the kick panel can be difficult, try installing the firewall side up first)

12. Reconnect Battery

13. Complete, test functionality
