FAQ by LTG Owners

I want increase my power, maybe get a downpipe or an air intake. Do I need a Tune?

Short answer, Yes. Factory calibrations work well for a generic population of a vehicle fleet. Working with a specialist for your platform will allow for a safer engine/transmission calibration for your specific combination, driving habits, and fuel availability.  If you are looking for an entry into vehicle modifications, options like ZZperformance Stage 1 kits are a solid choice. They also offer H.P tuner rentals for a budget-minded approach.

I want run E85, Do I need upgraded injectors?

Switching to E85 fuel impacts your entire fuel system, from the low-pressure fuel pump to the high-pressure fuel pump, and ultimately the fuel injectors. The need for upgraded injectors depends on several factors, including your vehicle's power goals, current modifications, and the type of fuel being used. At BDEcalibrations, we evaluate each situation on a case-by-case basis to provide tailored recommendations. We can help you determine if injector upgrades are necessary for your specific setup and guide you toward the most cost-effective solution. Contact us with your vehicle details and goals, and we would be happy to lend our recommendations.

I've heard that port injection will supply more power than upgrading injectors?

Port injection does add extra fuel to the engine, but it's important to understand that this fuel is not recognized by the vehicle's ECM (Engine Control Module). To effectively integrate a port injection system, the ECM's air model must be manipulated to account for this additional fuel. One significant challenge is that the ECM cannot detect this extra fuel, which can complicate the use of a flex-fuel system without an external fuel source for the port injection. While it's feasible to set up a port injection system with an external fuel cell (like we have in our record-setting car), relying on the factory ECM for fuel delivery control is generally safer and more reliable. Thanks to recent advancements in Direct Injectors, the need for additional port fueling should be carefully evaluated based on each specific application. At BDEcalibrations, we've developed software to analyze fuel injector pulse width, engine RPM, injector start and end timing, and desired air-fuel ratios. This data-driven approach helps us address questions about fueling needs. If you're considering the best fueling solutions for your vehicle, we invite you to reach out. Our team is ready to work with you to achieve your specific performance goals with optimal solutions.

How does transmission calibration affect my vehicle's performance?

Transmission calibration plays a pivotal role in harnessing your vehicle's full performance potential. It's about more than just tweaking settings; it requires a deep understanding of how the transmission interacts with the engine's control module. The transmission relies on data from the ECM, such as air flow and engine load, to optimize shift points, shift pressure, and timing. A well-calibrated transmission ensures these systems work together seamlessly, which is not only paramount for achieving peak performance but also for maintaining the safety and reliability of the transmission. At BDEcalibrations, we specialize in finely tuning both the ECM air tables and the transmission calibration of vehicles with the 6L45 and 6L50 transmissions. Our goal is to create a harmonious balance that improves acceleration, enhances shifting response, and delivers an exhilarating driving experience, all while ensuring the utmost safety and reliability of your vehicle. Whether your focus is daily driving or competitive racing, our bespoke calibration strategies are designed to meet and exceed your specific performance objectives.

What oil is the best for my car, I've heard dexos is the best choice?

Choosing the right oil for your car, especially with Direct Injection engines, involves considering factors like fuel dilution and Low Spark Pre-Ignition (LSPI). At BDEcalibrations, after extensive research and numerous tests, we've found that oils with an API SP rating offer the best performance. This rating indicates the oil contains an additive package tested specifically to limit LSPI. However, it's important to remember that fuel dilution varies based on individual vehicle usage. We recommend getting your oil analyzed regularly by a reliable lab (such as speediagnostix.com or Horizon Labs) to determine the best oil for your specific situation. In our experience, including on our world record-setting vehicle and our stock ATS, Mobil1 0w40 FS and Mobil 1 Supercar 5w50 have delivered exceptional results. These choices emerged as top performers after testing four different engine configurations with six different oil types and grades. If you need personalized advice on choosing the right oil for your car, don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to help you make the best choice based on data and expertise.

I've heard that remote tuning is not as good as "in-person" on a dyno, shouldn't I just go to my local tuner?

In an ideal word, you would want to have Both remote calibrations dyno calibrations. ECM calibrations can be made safe and perform well in both scenarios. You might not be able to race a Dyno, but it can provide valuable feedback on certain modifications while maintaining consistent testing conditions. Remote tuning you will be receiving adjustments based on the actual conditions your vehicle is in. TCM calibrations on the other hand you will see the greatest benifits from actual on the road We only offer remote tuning at this time, and have had great success with it, as has countless others across multiple platforms.

Are forged internals recommended for an upgraded Turbo?

Absolutely! Upgrading your turbo significantly increases the demand on your engine, and the factory pistons in the LTG aren't designed for that kind of stress. For high-level modifications, it's crucial to use robust components. We've consistently achieved excellent results with the forged rods and pistons from ZZPerformance. While there are various options available, our experience shows that these components reliably meet the challenges of enhanced power outputs. Remember, a solid foundation is key to maximizing performance and longevity when pushing your engine to new limits.
